You’ve got this great idea to start a blog and you want everything to be perfect. You have written a few posts and read everything about blogging but you think you’re still not ready to launch because you don’t have a logo and can’t afford to pay hundreds of dollar for one. But remember this: You don’t need an expensive logo to be successful!
FREE is always good in my books
Since all sites/blogs need to be responsive now, meaning they look good on any decices, it’s very acceptable to have a simple text logo, which will resize nicely and still be very readable. When I say simple, I don’t mean blah! – I mean without any elements other than the text.
By all means though, try to use a nice font for it. I would stay away from script fonts, because they tend to be hard to read. But if you find one that you love and it looks great, then go for it. The only fonts that you can use are the ones already set up in your theme or any you find on Google Webfonts where there are over 800 different ones.
To add the font that you want:
- if you are using a GENESIS theme, just go to your Genesis theme settings (in your WordPress dashboard) and add the code you get from Google fonts in the Head section near the bottom.
- if you are NOT using GENESIS, then you will have to install this plugin Easy Google Fonts and follow the documentation to add your new font
Now you just need to write your blog’s name and a description for a tagline if you want, in your WordPress customizer. Make sure you don’t upload an image.
Text + small element
For something a little bit fancier, you can use Canva. If you never used it before, you’re missing out.
Login to Canva and on the opening page, find the logo templates under the Marketing Materials section. There are a whole bunch of free ones. Try all of them if you want, you can change all the colors and the fonts as well, so go nuts!
Make sure once you got the one you want, before you download it, click on the transparency icon at the top right beside the garbage can and slide it to 0 so you can have a transparent background. Now make sure you save it in png format.
It will be too big, so after you download it, go to picmonkey to crop it and resize it to fit the header of your blog. In the customizer, it will tell you what size it should be, it all depends on your theme.
Not Free but very affordable

Although you’ll need Photoshop or Illustrator to edit them. I know these softwares are very expensive, so I bought one that is so much better because you don’t have to pay on a monthly basis, it’s called Affinity and they have Affinity Designer (equivalent to Illustrator) and Affinity Photo (equivalent to Photoshop) and each is only $49.99, no subscription. They come in both version, Mac and Windows. I absolutely love them.
You can find different styles and different prices in Etsy shops. Prices go from $10 to over $100, depending on the options you choose. Some artists also sell Branding packages, with colors, graphics, etc. So it’s worth checking it out and see if you find something you like within your budget.
As you can see, you don’t need spend hundreds of dollars on a logo and you don’t need a killer logo to be successful!
